The Fayetteville Purple Dogs’ nonconference schedule is a challenge with trips to Bryant and Dallas being on the agenda. Last Friday night, Fayetteville made the trip to Bryant in a rematch of a playoff game last season. From an outside perspective, fans were expecting the game between Fayetteville and Bryant to be a close game once again. A close game would not be the case in this early season matchup between two of the stronger teams in the state.

Fayetteville’s offense struggled during the first game of the season against Blue Springs with sustaining drives and being able to punch the ball in the end zone. Friday night against Bryant, Fayetteville did not have the struggles on the offensive side of the ball. The Purple Dogs were able to grab a quick 14-0 in the first quarter and did not look back. The Fayetteville offense did a good job of keeping the Hornets’ defense off balance throughout the game. Taylor Powell would connect on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Barrett Banister to make the score 20-7 before the half.

The Hornets’ defense would hold Fayetteville scoreless during the third quarter. The score would remain 20-7 before Bryant tacked on a field goal to close the gap to 20-10. The Fayetteville offense would then take over the remainder of the game. The Purple Dogs scored the next 23 points in the game. Fayetteville would go on to defeat Bryant 43-10, behind a strong offensive effort and impressive defensive effort. Taylor Powell finished the game 17 of 29 for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Powell would also tack on the final touchdown of the game when he snuck the ball in from 1 yard out.

The nonconference slate will continue for both Fayetteville and Bryant next week. Fayetteville will travel to Dallas to take on Dallas Bishop Dunne in a battle of undefeated teams. Bryant will take on Lake Hamilton, who is coming off of a close loss to Malvern. Look for Bryant and Lake Hamilton each to come in looking for a win next week. Fayetteville will have to get solid play on both sides of the ball; this Bishop Dunne is a very good team on both sides of the ball and that should be an excellent game. Conference play is around the corner and both Bryant and Fayetteville want to end the nonconference slate in a strong fashion.
