The match up that always seems to have playoff implications has been moved up in the schedule this season with the addition of Bentonville West High School. Fayetteville and Bentonville has become one of the state’s biggest games and best rivalries. The Tigers and the Purple Dogs always seem to meet when playoff positioning or a state championship is on the line. The Bentonville-Fayetteville game may even be more important this year, because it could determine how both teams approach conference play.

To start the season, Bentonville has been tested several times and defeated once, but the defense seems to be performing stronger every week. Bentonville played a tough defensive game against Conway and defeated the Wampus Cats 16-7. Bentonville will need the defense to perform as well as it has the past two weeks. The Fayetteville offense will provide a different test for this Tigers team. Bentonville has proven that they can win the shootouts and the game this week could prove to be a shootout.

Fayetteville comes into the game against Bentonville, with some changes that have been made. Early indications are that the changes that were made have not had any effect on the quality of football that the Purple Dogs are playing. Fayetteville won a close contest against Blue Springs, hammered Bryant, and played a solid game against Texas power Dallas Bishop Dunne in defeating Bishop Dunne 35-25.

The Fayetteville offense has been strong behind the arm of Taylor Powell. Powell had three touchdowns last week, but threw three interceptions, so cutting down on the turnovers will be key this week against the strong Bentonville defense. The Fayetteville defense has been just as impressive as the Bentonville defense. Forcing turnovers at the right time has preserved several Fayetteville victories this season. Friday night is going to be a fun game to watch and in all likelihood Fayetteville and Bentonville will meet again in November.
